Day 09 | Doors

Batik handel traditional house HM. Moeh has two layers of door ~ frosted glass and timber.

Open one layer: to allow penetration of filtered natural light through the frosted glass into the interior spaces

Close both layers: for security

Open both layers: to allow more natural light and ventilation

In my opinion, a door is not just a door; it represents an interaction between spaces, nature and human or maybe more, intersection? Through the doors of Batik handel traditional house, we saw many stories unfolding along the narrow alley of Kampung Kauman. Children were having fun, chicken roaming freely for food, neighbours, are selling snacks, and some primary students from the local school watching us, feeling curious about our measured drawing project!

Through our measured drawing project, we started to get closer to each other. We all are learning from each other while tackling to measure architectural elements, elevations, plans and sections on the second day of measured drawing (Day 9 of the field school). Some overlap of work was faced when participants from group 2 who are responsible for door and window measurements also carefully recorded ornamental motifs on doors, which was as the job assigned to group 4 participants responsible for recording architectural details. After discussion among the groups, the tasks were quickly redefined, and the issue of overlapping work got resolved smoothly. Group 3 (responsible for sections) cooperated with group 1 (plans) to record measurements accurately. I must say that measuring the roof height was the biggest challenge for today (BIG thanks to Andro)! Things went efficiently as all groups completed their tasks on time.

Tomorrow will be the last day for us to work on site measurements. And tomorrow will be the last day when we would open the doors of Batik handel traditional house to experience its spaces. In the end, we all must realise that to sense a place we must not only open the door from the outside but also from the inside.
